Scam prevention for seniors this October

Every October, the U.S. marks Cybersecurity Awareness Month. CISA is the federal lead, with the National Cybersecurity Alliance. In 2026 their published theme is “Securing the Next 250.” A household can use the month for one practical pause: save the real numbers, and look at one message together before anyone pays.

What this month is, and what FamilyShieldPro is not

Cybersecurity Awareness Month started in 2004. It is a public campaign, not a product review and not a promise that a text is safe. FamilyShieldPro is not a government program. We do not stamp a request as safe or fake.

The useful part for a family is the same rule we already use: never send money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, passwords, or account information until the request is independently verified. Independently verified means a number or website you already had. It does not mean the link or the phone number inside the message that just arrived.

Four things to do this month

Do these on a calm day, before a scare arrives. None of them requires special software on a parent’s phone.

What a check will and will not do

Someone has to bring the message in. FamilyShieldPro does not read a phone by itself. A check can point at gift cards, crypto, wires, a rush, a secret, or a relative “in trouble,” and it can compare a number to the list you saved. That is a warning, not a verdict.

It does not freeze a card, reverse a payment, or file a report for you. A 14-day trial, then Family monthly at $5 or Family yearly at $50, pays for the family tool. Paying does not make a request safe. A circle holds up to five people. We do not sell people’s information.

If money already went out

Call the bank on the number printed on the card or a statement, not a number from the text. Tell the gift-card seller, the crypto exchange, or the wire service the same day. Those payments are hard to undo. Still report them.

Questions families ask

What is a useful scam-prevention step for seniors this month?

On a calm day, write down real bank, doctor, and family numbers. Then look at one message together before anyone pays. A missing warning phrase is not a stamp that the request is safe.
