Family emergency scam: a relative in trouble

A message says a grandchild is in jail, someone crashed a car, or a parent needs bail money and you must not tell the rest of the family. Treat that as a reason to pause and call a number you already have.

What to do in the first few minutes

If you cannot reach them, call someone else who would know, still using a number you already had. A voice on the phone can be faked. A story that forbids you to check with the family is the part to refuse.

Put the screenshot where the family can see it

Paste the text or upload the screenshot into FamilyShieldPro so the household is looking at one copy. The check is written to pause on stories about jail, arrest, bail, a grandkid, a crash, or “in trouble,” and on lines that say not to tell mom or dad or to keep it between you.

That is a warning sign, not a ruling. If the words are different, you still pause. Tap “Please call me before I pay” when you are close to sending something. The alert names the person who brought the message in.

If you already paid

Call your bank on the number from the card and tell the gift-card or wire company what left. FamilyShieldPro cannot reverse it. Report what happened so there is an official record.

A grandparent scam is one kind of family emergency scam

A grandparent scam aims at an older person: a grandchild is in trouble, and you must not tell the parents. The same pause applies if the story is a niece, a son, or a partner. Call a number saved before today. Do not call the number in the text. The grandparent scam guide walks through that version on its own.

Questions families ask

What is a family emergency scam?

A text or call says a relative is in jail, in a crash, or needs bail, and you must not tell the rest of the family. Pause and call a number you saved before today.

Should I keep it secret if they ask?

No. The request for secrecy is part of the pressure. Tell someone else in the family, using a number you already had. FamilyShieldPro does not stamp the story as safe or fake.

Use it with your household

A new circle includes a 14-day trial, then Family monthly is $5 or Family yearly is $50. Paying does not make a request safe. You keep what you entered. We do not sell people’s information.
